Book Review: “From Recovery to Restoration” by Elizabeth Turnage

The number one thing that gets repeated in my cancer mom support group is: “I thought that once treatment was over, everything would go back to normal. But instead I find that I am more anxious, more scared, and more overwhelmed now than when we were in the middle of the crisis.”

It is an understandable thought process. You we assume that once a crisis is over, we’ll recover, and bounce back to “normal”.

What we don’t realize is that in the middle of the crisis we are in fight or flight mode. Adrenaline is going full speed all the time. Your body, your mind, and your heart are all focused on getting through the crisis. It’s not until after the adrenaline leaves, that you are able to process all that you’ve been through.

We long to recover from our crisis and bounce back to our old selves and our old lives. But we need more than just recovery, we need restoration.

And that’s what Elizabeth’s newest devotional is all about. You may have read my review of her first devotional “The Waiting Room”. I have given away countless copies to friends and strangers who are in the midst of a crisis – people still in the waiting room.

But now I get to tell you about her latest book “From Recovery to Restoration”! – once we are out of the waiting room – how do we find restoration from all the trauma our crisis left with us?

Elizabeth has walked her fair share of crisis (medical and otherwise). She knows what it feels like to recover, and to long for wholeness after feeling so broken. She also knows that the only true way to be restored is to be lavished by the love of Jesus. And that is what she shares in this book.

You won’t find any self-help methods here. Instead, she takes your hand and gently leads you to the feet of Jesus. She fills your heart with gospel truths about how God has entered your brokenness and is restoring all things. She reminds you of God’s deep love, His unfailing promises, and the hope that is always part of God’s story for us.

She uses the same format as her first book – easy, quick devotionals with additional Scriptures, songs and journal prompt questions to help you process in the way that works best for you.
